Coastline A German Target In WWII

Readers: For March, we’ve been running columns in honor of Neighborhood Post’s expansion into the West Palm Beach-Palm Beach-Riviera Beach area and the Treasure Coast. Here are some key Palm Beach County dates to illuminate our new readers and refresh our regulars:
1840-1842: Soldiers discover and name Lake Worth, in honor of William Jenkins Worth, leader of U.S. forces in the Second Seminole War. July 10, 1860: Jupiter Lighthouse begins operation. July 28, 1873: First formal
homestead claim in Lake Worth region filed.
1885-1893: “Barefoot Mailman” route operates from Jupiter Lighthouse to Cape Florida (Key Biscayne). July 4, 1889: Jupiter and Lake Worth (Celestial) Railway, the first in South Florida, opens, spanning 71/2- miles from Jupiter to Juno. February 1894: Flagler’s grand Royal Poinciana Hotel opens in Palm Beach.
1908: The Central School complex, later Palm Beach High, is built on “the hill” west of downtown West Palm Beach. May 19, 1920: Good Samaritan, area’s first permanent hospital, opens. Sept. 16, 1928: hurricane crumbles dike around Lake Okeechobee, drowning up to 3,000 people in the second-deadliest disaster in U.S. history. Dec. 19, 1936: New West Palm Beach airport is dedicated and named Morrison Field in honor of Grace K. Morrison, secretary to famed architect Maurice Fatio.
February-May 1942: German U-boats sink 16 ships between Cape Canaveral and Boca Raton. Sept. 10, 1964: Florida Atlantic University opens in Boca Raton. September 1967: IBM opens in Boca Raton; team of engineers develops first IBM personal computer.
November-December 2000: Presidential election recount makes Palm Beach County the center of attention. September-October 2001: County learns many Sept. 11 hijackers lived in area; anthrax attacks start in Boca Raton.

    During the 40`s driving along AIA around the Delray Beach area, not sure, there use to be a Radar site between AIA and the beach.
