SR A1A Washed Away, Was Rerouted

Some housekeeping:
After reading the Feb. 13 Post Time column on Alternate A1A, Bruce Jensen of Briny Breezes, a 1957 graduate of Lake Worth High, recalled riding motor scooters to the beach where The Ritz-Carlton in Manalapan now stands.
Jensen says a paved road ran from Lantana to the Lake Worth Casino and that the beach extended much farther; both are now gone.
We visited this in a 2003 column.
Rain washed away parts of State Road A1A in Palm Beach in 1947. Three years later, the state built a 2 1/2-mile stretch of road from Sloan’s Curve to the old Lake Worth Casino.
In Manalapan, A1A was rerouted to the west in the 1940s, from about 11/2 miles south of The Ritz-Carlton down to the Boynton Inlet, to allow more oceanfront property but also because the road kept eroding into the waves.
After the Feb. 6 column, on the story behind the name of Yamato Road, Florence Rodner of suburban Delray Beach asked, “Could you please settle a dispute on the correct pronunciation of Yamato?”
We dealt with this and other pronunciations in a January 2003 column.
Apparently the Japanese don’t pronounce hard vowels, so the road should be ‘”YAH-muh-toe.” But it’s been called “yuh-MAH-toe” for so long it’s become the norm.
And our segment last summer on the 50th anniversary of Palm Springs prompted a note from longtime resident Mel Penney, who solved the mystery of Lillian Road.
She said Palm Beach developer Jack Frost was responsible for the Frost Park development, off Congress Avenue and Forest Hill Boulevard, and that his builder, Frank Dolan, named Lillian Road for his wife.
