Local athletes make the big time

As part of its celebration of 100 years of Florida high school football, the Florida High School Athletic Association unveiled its list of the 100 greatest players in Florida history in December 2007. The 15 area players on the list include past stars — Carver’s Barry Hill, Kennedy’s Lemar Parrish and Atlantic’s Bobby Butler — and present ones — Pahokee’s Anquan Boldin, Suncoast’s Devin Hester and Santaluces’ Vince Wilfork.

Area high school football players who made the list:
Ottis Anderson (Forest Hill)
John Carney (Cardinal Newman)
Anthony Carter (Suncoast)
Eddie Edwards (Fort Pierce Central)
Jessie Hester (Glades Central)
Rickey Jackson (Pahokee)
Don Latimer (Fort Pierce Central)
Antone Smith (Pahokee)
Fred Taylor (Glades Central)

We know there are a lot more local athletes that have made the big time, and not just in football. We’d like your help in making a comprehensive list of them.

If you know of other local athletes who made the big time in sports — in the pros or the Olympics — let us know in the comments below, and make sure to include who they are, where they made it big, and where they went to elementary, middle and high school.

  1. Santonio Holmes (Pittsburgh Steelers) played for Glades Central

  2. Lawrence Chester, who attended Lake Shore Junior-Senior High School in the Glades, played for the Falcons.
He was the 15th draft pick in 1967. Chester is believed to be the first football player from Belle Glade who made it to the NFL.
