This week in history: Snow falls on Palm Beach County
By Michelle Quigley
On Jan. 19 1977 the first-ever recorded snow fell in Palm Beach County. Most of it melted on impact, but accumulations of up to a quarter-inch were reported in sheltered areas from Jupiter to Delray.
Read all about it the Jan. 20, 1977, Palm Beach Post here.

Ray Wall takes a look at the frozen trees at Cavenaugh Nurseries in West Palm Beach on Jan. 20, 1977, the day after it snowed in South Florida. The 27-degree temperature recorded at Palm Beach International Airport the day after the snow is the all-time record low for the area.

I have a vivid memory of being in First Grade, waiting for the school bus to King’s Academy and running around the yard in Lake Clarke Shores screaming “Frosty the Snowman” at the top of my lungs and catching snowflakes on my tongue and being able to make mini snowballs off the car windshield ….
I was 12 and waiting outside at the car to go to school (LW Jr. High). These little white specks started to fall everywhere. At first I thought some joker was up on the roof (they were apartments) with soap flakes, but then I looked closely at the ones that had fallen on the car’s windshield, and finally realized that they were snowflakes. I ran in the apartment yelling “it’s snowing, it’s snowing”. We wers so excitied! It didn’t last very long, but it was a blast!
I was 16 years old was on my first class at Atlantic High School in Delray Beach when I noticed this like tiny feathers falling down and at the same time sombody shouted is snowing! everybody rushed out of the classrooms in minutes the whole school was out having an amazing time it didn’t last long but that was my first and last time i seen snow.
I was at my school bus stop in WPB waiting to go to Twin Lakes HS. I ran back home to tell my parents. Really cool!!!
