This week in history: Before it was Palm Beach County, it was Dade
On Feb. 4, 1836, the Florida Legislature chose the name Dade County for the area from the upper Keys to Jupiter. The county was named for Major Francis Langhorne Dade who was massacred by Indians in north central Florida at the beginning of the Second Seminole War. Indian Key was the county seat.

This marker stands on the spot where Francis Dade fell when he was killed in 1835. The site of the battle is now Dade Battlefield Historic State Park in Bushnell Fla.
