This week in history: Southern Bell buys West Palm Beach Telephone Company
On Dec. 22, 1919, federal and state regulators approved Southern Bell’s takeover of the West Palm Beach Telephone Company from owner Marion Eugene Gruber. Gruber was the third mayor of West Palm Beach and owner of M.E. Gruber Hardware and Furniture (which later became the Palm Beach Mercantile) and Gruber-Carlberg Company real estate developers.
