This week in history: Jupiter incorporates

On Feb. 9, 1925, the town of Jupiter was incorporated. The name Jupiter appeared on maps of the area as early as 1770, and likely came from the name of the Jobe (or Jove) Indians. Early settlers mistook the name Jove as a variant of the name of the Roman god Jupiter. By July 1925, the new town had expanded its borders and proposed a “one-half million dollar bond issue for streets and improvements.” Read more about the history of Jupiter and the whys and wherefores of its incorporation at the town’s history web site.
