This week in history: Highland Beach incorporated
The 21 residents of Highland Beach — so named because at 25 feet above high tide the coastal community was higher than surrounding areas — voted to incorporate the town on June 2, 1949 for two reasons: to keep out a proposed trailer camp, and to fund their own water plant because salt was intruding into their wells and neighboring communities were hesitant to share their water supplies.
