This week in history: Beeline Highway completed

On Aug. 13, 1958, nearly two decades after the Bee Line Highway Association assembled in Sebring to discuss the construction of a highway linking West Palm Beach and Tampa, the highway now known as the Beeline was completed.

A 1944 story in the Miami Daily News described the planned highway: “The road extends in almost a straight line from West Palm Beach to Tampa and connects the populous east coast cities from Miami over U.S. 1 and Stuart and Ft. Pierce over short connections with Sebring, the ridge tourist and citrus section, Tampa and populous west coast cities.”
