This week in history: Snow falls on Palm Beach County

By Michelle Quigley

On Jan. 19 1977 the first-ever recorded snow fell in Palm Beach County. Most of it melted on impact, but accumulations of up to a quarter-inch were reported in sheltered areas from Jupiter to Delray.

Read all about it the Jan. 20, 1977, Palm Beach Post here.

You think this is cold? In 1977 it was so cold that The Palm Beach Post front page banner had icicles on it.

The front page weather story on January 20, 1977, began like this:

Record-shattering cold that created heavy snow flurries for the first time ever in Palm Beach County also caused a flurry of problems with crops freezing, schools closing, power failing and ducks dying.

The Martin-St. Lucie section of The Post even had some helpful tips for what to do with snow:

Snow can be a pleasure or a pain — it all depends on your point of view.

So in case it snows again, here’s a list of things you can do, the things generations of kids in the North have done to help them enjoy winter.

Make a snow shake — Take a glass of milk and keep adding handfuls of snow until it turns slushy.

Make a snow angel — Flop on your back and wave your arms and legs. See, it looks like an angel with wings.

Eat a snowball — It’s refreshing.

Wash your face in the snow.

Wash your kid brother’s face in the snow.

Catch a snowflake on your tongue.

Make a snowman — The correct way to make a snowman is to start with a snowball and roll it in the snow until it gets bigger. Make one big snowball for the body and one for the head. Then use coal (charcoal is an acceptable southern substitute) for eyes and a carrot for the nose.

Build an igloo — It’s harder than it sounds.

Have a snowball fight.
